My motto: coffee in one hand. Confidence in the other.
Theres quite a stigma behind the nursing career and looking presentable. Many think for one to be a successful nurse, their hair must be in a messy bun, minimal makeup and quite often, sunken in tired eyes with breath that reeks of coffee. Although I must admit the latter is quite true, the rest I don't necessarily agree on. In fact, I take pride in getting ready for work each morning or afternoon (depending on which shift I work) because I truly believe it makes you perform your job far better.
Allow me to explain.
To take on the work day in full speed with confidence and poise, I find it absolutely necessary that I take 20-30 minutes out of my day to get ready. (Now, let me stop there and tell you all, on my days off, I do not get ready. In fact, my sons and I lay in pajamas and often times just enjoy movies and snacks around the house.) However, if I am about to spend 13 hours saving lives, you better believe I am going in full glam. I know, this sounds quite silly and Im sure some of you are rolling your eyes at the above comment, but once you try it and see how good you feel, you will NEVER turn back.
Confidence is so important in performing your job well. My motto: coffee in one hand. Confidence in the other. Getting ready makes you feel confident and feeling confident gives you the strength to tackle each day’s struggles. Confidence is everything. Even if you are faced with situations you don't know how to handle, at least you know you'll have the confidence to learn and make it through.
So, with all that being said, I’d love to share with you guys three of my favorite nursing makeup necessities. These have all been tested with 12 hour shifts and I guarantee you that they’ll have you coming back for more. Some of the things I look for in products include:
- Long lasting
- Sometimes waterproof
- Keeps me from looking oily
- Coverage.
The first product is my favorite foundation. I have probably tried 10 or more foundations and I can attest that MAC Studio Fix Fluid is BY FAR my favorite out there. I know its a little on the heavier side, but with a good cleansing system at night, you should have absolutely no problem with it. (Ill go into cleansers and my everyday cleansing routine another time). Some things I love about this include: ULTIMATE full coverage, long lasting, colors are always very close to natural skin tone and lastly, it has 15 SPF, which is awesome.
The second product is Bare Minerals BarePro pressed powder. I like to use this to set my foundation with, but I know it is definitely a good enough coverage to wear on its own. On the days I am running a little behind, I will just use this by itself and it has amazing buildable coverage. On top of that, it is matte which is perfect for oily skin types and it has over 30 different colors to choose from. If you like a lighter coverage with 12 hour wear and breathable foundation, then this one is definitely for you.
Lastly, my favorite mascara in the world right now is the L’oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise. The brush is absolutely amazing and helps thicken, lengthen and even separate the lashes. This is a perfect dupe to the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. Literally it is 1/3rd of the cost, with a similar long lasting formula. Two coats and I am good for the entire 12 hour shift.
So if you're trying to make it through an entire 12 hour shift in minimal to full glam, check out these amazing products.
Thanks for letting me share some of my beauty advice with you all! I have a ton more I’d love to share with you guys and I am always testing out new products to see if they’ll make the cut. If you’re interested in more nursing/glam articles, please feel free to DM me at @alexx_xox.
