As the U.S. population grows older, demand for all physician specialties is rising dramatically across the country. The Association of American Medical Collegesestimates that the U.S. will face a shortage of more than 90,000 physicians by 2020 and 130,000 by 2015. With this in mind, we thought it might be interesting to see where a patient in the U.S. might find the highest concentration of active physicians to choose from by state.

This data was taken from a November 2011 AAMC State Physician Workforce Data Book. The Northeast Corridor seems to be home to the highest concentration of physicians, ranging from New Jersey and Pennsylvania up through Maine. Massachusetts had the highest total number of physicians per capita with 415.5 physicians per 100,000 residents. The state with the lowest number of physicians per capita was Mississippi with 176.4 active physicians per 100,000 residents.
