Cedars Sinai Hospital Sees Twin Boom From New Mothers

| Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Recently Cedar Sinai has seen a surprising boom in twins born in their  Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) - a whopping 12 sets in the last 30 days.

“I have been working in the NICU for along time and I have never seen this many sets of twins” - Natalie Tertarian Registered Nurse

Fertility specialists say the hospital does have about 8 times the amount of babies born from fertility treatments compared to hospitals in other parts of the country, and continues to give the reasoning behind this identical baby trend they’ve been experiencing.

“We live in a part of the country where most women will wait to have children, and age alone increases your risk to have multiples, even spontaneous twins. - Margareta Pisarska Fertility Specialist

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine observed 900 couples who had trouble conceiving for at least a year despite normal reproductive function. The study was conducted at 12 clinics across the U.S. by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Women in the study were between 18 and 40 years old and had male partners with sperm counts healthy enough for artificial insemination.

The study compared two common drugs that promote extra egg release to a newer treatment using an aromatase inhibitor called letrozole, which has shown promising pregnancy rates without increased birth defects in other studies.

An environment of compassionate care for new mothers

This seems a logical explanation for Cedar’s recent twin boom, and speaks to the future of fertility health in America. This emotional roller coaster of fertility is is now producing a lot more double-happy endings for new parents, and twin moms at Cedars have discussed and shared their similar situations amongst each other, further comforting and preparing them for what lies outside the hospital walls - the fascinating world of parenting.

“We kind of share in the same situation, and we’re talking and sharing tips, and giving each other mutual support.” Natalie Anvar twin mom

Twin moms have much to be thankful for, not only the twins and the joy of having children, but Cedar’s warm staff lending comfort to many first-time twin parents.

“I think one of the reasons I’m not so worried about my babie sis because of the lovely staff that they have here. I don’t think I would’ve been able to take care of my babies as well as they do.” said Nidhi Gupta Twin mom of 15 day old identical boys

Currently twins make up about half the beds in the NICU, but all these happy moms hope they’ll be in their own cribs very soon.
