Fellowship programs follow completion of a medical residency. While completion of a fellowship is not necessary for all medical specialties, they are a requirement for certain specialties and sub-specialties. The list below represents the major fellowship programs and consequently is an indicator of those medical specialties and sub-specialties that physicians specializing in those practices include in their training. Since fellowship appointments start anywhere from 6 to 14 months from the match days (the date the match is announced), applications for fellowship programs are usually submitted in the last year or two of a residency program. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is a private, not-for-profit corporation whose primary function is to optimize the rank ordered choices of applicants and program directors by providing an impartial venue for matching the preferences of the applicants with the preferences of the programs. The NRMP provides this service for residency positions through its Main Residency Match (MRM) program. It provides a comparable service for advanced residency and fellowship positions through its Specialties Matching Service (SMS). Unlike residency matches, fellowship matches occur throughout the year and each one requires its own registration process with the NRMP. The factors to be considered in deciding what fellowship program to apply for are usually less complex than choosing a medical school or residency program. Presumably the specialty has already been chosen. In many instances a decision on the state the applicant intends to locate their practice has been determined and possibly the city as well. Having studied which residency programs in the applicant’s specialty are most respected, there’s undoubtedly some awareness of the most respected fellowship programs. In some instances they may be at the same institution. The following four fellowships will be added to the NRMP’s SMS program for the appointment year 2013.
  • Adolescent Medicine
  • Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases
  • Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine
