Russell Russo, MD was born and raised in New Orleans, and is proud to call it home. Dr. Russo grew up loving sports and was sidelined by an injury. This is ultimately what drove him to become a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon--so he can get young athletes back on the field.
Dr. Russo recently became director of sports medicine at New Orleans East Hospital after a year of building a new program for high school sports in this area, one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. In his own words:
"With the advances in sports medicine I learned in Houston taking care of the Astros, Rockets, and Texans, we will provide state of the art care to high school athletes that have never had that level of care."
Dr. Russo was recently named chairman of Angel's Place, a charity for families with children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses in New Orleans and surrounding communities. As some of the children are dependent on machines to survive or have significant signs of their disease, it takes a special volunteer with a medical background to be able to look past those things and be there for the children and families. Angel's Place provides comfort to the families going through this difficult process. Angel's Place help the parents by giving them free time, providing gas money to get to and from the Children's Hospital, and sponsoring or volunteering at events where they can get families together to help them cope together.
